I was invited to participate in the Discover Durban Design stand curated by Nadia Jonker at the 2018 East Coast Radio House & Garden Show. The stand featured a selection of products from Durban based artists and brands, and instead of providing a product I proposed doing a mural on the stand wall. The abstract style and colour palette were chosen based on the colour scheme of the stand and was made to tie together and complement the elements being showcased. The stand as a whole won a gold medal award.

The style was different to any of my previous work but was something I’d been thinking about and playing around with for a while, and this wall provided the perfect canvas and context to try it out.

Live Lettering at Skyline Coffee Big Box Co HQ Opening
I was invited to provide live customised hand lettering for customers at the launch of the Big Box Co and Skyline Coffee’s new venue on Gordon Rd, off Florida Rd in Durban, South Africa. It’s a great new space that functions as a coffee shop and co-working space. It was such a fun evening, and people loved having their messages or names custom lettered by me while they watched or socialised. It’s such a great way to add interest to an event, create a branded keepsake with personal value, and provide something fun and customised for them to share on social media.

Live Lettering at the Country Road Christmas Event

I was invited to do some live lettering and customisation at the Country Road Christmas event in December 2017 at their Gateway branch in Durban, SA. It was such a fun event and so great to see the excitement on people’s faces seeing their own messages being custom hand lettered by me for them to share with their loved ones.

Editorial Hand Lettering for Ideas Magazine

Ideas Magazine (SA) got in touch after seeing my illustrations for my Instagram daily doodle project themed “Words in Shapes” (#HIWordsinShapes). I created a “words in shapes”hand lettered illustration for their pull-out quote page in the June 2015 issue with the quote “Be the person your dog thinks you are.” by JW Stephens.

Aliverti Store Window Mural Illustration

I had an awesome opportunity to work with Portfolio Design on a window mural illustration for the new Aliverti boutique shoe store in Kloof, Durban. This was a hand drawn illustration across the top of three large windows. It was a super fun project and turned out exactly as I’d intended, so I’m pretty happy with it. One of my favourite aspects of the process was seeing people’s reactions as I drew it – they would stop to watch, smile, and even come in to ask about it or share a complement. It’s a great way to create interest and engagement for stores and live events.

Editorial Illustration for The Coffee Magazine

I was commissioned to create an editorial illustration piece for an article about the African origin of coffee. This was a digital illustration created to have a tactile, hand drawn feel.

I also hand lettered the article title, along with the word for “beginning” in Amharic, the official Ethiopian language.

Hand Lettering for Sea Glass Wedding Place Cards

I worked with Joelene from Oh Happy Day to create these place cards for a beautiful wedding for her client. What a lovely idea to use pieces of sea glass for place cards! I hand lettered each one

with each person’s name, and I think the overall effect is pretty beautiful…

Watercolour Editorial Illustration and Hand Lettering for Coffee Magazine

I had the opportunity to work on two articles in issue 21 of Coffee Magazine. For one of them, Finding the Art in Coffee, I worked on some brush lettering for the title as well as some painted related elements. The second article was about coffee flavours, so I created some watercolour food illustrations of lemons, pizza,

coffee beans and espressos. This was such fun to work on and I love how they turned out.

“Bad Britain” Vector Illustrations

Vector illustrations created for an infographic for an online article, “Bad Britain: sex, drugs & gambling – the crazy cost of Broken Britain”.
The illustrations depict six vices: drugs, smoking, alcohol, fast food , sex and gambling. I enjoyed working with this style and with the limited colour palette for each vice section.
